Pearl
I have always thought that pearls come in few colors only. The most common color is creamy white. There is the very rare, but quite beautiful black pearl.
Now when I go shop for pearls at a gem show, I see an array of colors ranging from maroon red to silver to gold to all kinds of colors imaginable. This is due to today's technology. Pearls can be dyed to have many different colors.
When I was in Hawaii a couple of years ago, my children and I visited one of the pearl factory booths in the mall. My children were so excited that they insisted on picking out an oyster. At the end, we picked out quite a few oysters. We ended up with more than what I intended to buy with the help of the vendor. Doesn't that sound familiar?
Out of all the oysters that we picked, there were about two that stood out. Not only their sizes were substantially larger than the others, the colors were too. One of them has a pink tone to it. The other one has a gray tone. The gray one was the biggest one out of all our pickings. I made a ring out of it. The pink tone one I turned it into a pendant and gave it to my daughter. We picked enough for a pair of earrings as well. Even with all this jewelry made from our picking, I still have a couple to spare. My three children still wanted to pick some more. Really, enough is enough.
Not only do the pearls no longer come in creamy white, they now have shapes other then the round for cultured pearls and rice shape for the fresh water pearls. They now come in flat, square and rectangular shapes as well.
Pearl is an organic gem. It is very soft and can be damaged from acids and heat. Because it is organic, they are be subject to decay. So it is very important to take very good care of them. Be sure to spray on the perfume and let the perfume settle before putting on the pearls. Use a damp cloth to wipe them after each use to maintain pearl's luster and they will last a long time.
The traditional properties for pearl are purity, faith, charity, innocence, integrity, focus, wisdom, spirituality, sincerity, fertility.
Pearl is the modern birthstone for June.
