Peridot is the gem-quality specimen of the mineral olivine. It has a characteristic yellow-green to olive-green color, hence the name. It sometimes has been mistaken for emerald.
Peridot has been mined for over 3,500 years from St. John's Island on the Red Sea. The gem was used for jewelry as early as the second millennium BC by the Egyptians. The Ancient Romans named the stone "Evening Emerald" for its brilliant green sparkle.
