Rainbow Obsidian
 When I first saw the rainbow obsidian at the gem show, I was attracted to it. At first I though it was onyx. With a closer look, I noticed the rainbow gradation on it. I loved the look. It does not have that solid black appearance as onyx. It is more subtle. It gives out a softer black. When I read about its mystical powers, it attracted me even more.
Obsidian is the result of volcanic lava coming in contact with water. The glassy texture of the stone is caused by the quick cooling of the lava when poured into lake or ocean.
It is commonly used for ornamental purposes and as a gemstone. It possesses a peculiar property of presenting a different appearance according to the manner in which it is cut. When cut in one direction it is a beautiful jet black stone. When cut across another direction its color is a glistening gray.
Obsidian was highly valued in certain Stone Age cultures because, like flint, it can be fractured to produce sharp blades or arrowheads. Like all glass and some other types of naturally occurring rocks, obsidian breaks with a characteristic conchoidal fracture. It may also have been polished to create early mirrors.
 Rainbow obsidian has a rainbow sheen to it and hence the name. The Mexican Indians worshiped rainbow obsidian as the sanctuary of their gods. They believed that the gods inhabited the rainbow obsidian when they visited the earth.
It is believed that rainbow obsidian regulates functions and has a powerful effect on the thyroid gland, ovaries, pancreas, adrenal and pituitary glands. It strengthens and controls the nervous system. The stone is also used in treatments of various kinds of addiction.
The wearer of rainbow obsidian can strengthen his or her mental powers and identifies weaknesses.
